All individuals who hold a class 1 property agent's licence, class 2 property agent's licence or a certificate of registration, as a class 3 assistant agent must complete the CPD specified for their licence or certificate category each year.
Failure to comply with your CPD requirements may result in the suspension or cancellation of your licence or certificate.
The CPD year for all licence and certificate holders starts on 23 March each year and ends on 22 March the following year.
Your CPD activities will depend on the level and type of licence you hold.
CPD activities for class 1 licence and class 2 licence include:
Compulsory topics – 3 hours per year
Compulsory topics are determined by NSW Fair Trading in consultation with industry and are delivered by industry associations, government agencies and other providers approved by Fair Trading.
Compulsory topics will change each CPD year. Between 23 March 2021 and 22 March 2022, the compulsory topics are:
1. COVID Safe Business (1 hour)
2. Disclosure of Material Facts (1 hour)
3. Short-term Rental Accommodation Code of Conduct (1 hour)
All resource guides and assessment practicums are provided to you in either hard copy or electronic format – whichever option you choose, being face to face or correspondence. The resource guide is used to develop a sound knowledge base of the topic.
To successfully complete the necessary hours of training, you will be required to complete a range of assessment tasks to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and understanding of each subject.

Any agent who successfully completes the course topics will be issued with a written notice, demonstrating completion of the compulsory topic including their personal details and information about the training undertaken.

Elective topics – 3 hours per year
Class 1 and class 2 licence holders must also complete 3 hours of CPD from Elective topics. A training provider does not need to be approved by Fair Trading to deliver Elective topics.

Business skills topics – 3 hours per year
Class 1 licence holders must also complete 3 hours of business skills topics per year. A training provider does not need to be approved by Fair Trading to deliver business skills topics.
Assistant Agent – Real Estate
Certificate of registration holders as an assistant real estate agent must complete at least 3 units each CPD year from a valid Certificate IV qualification that is required for the issue of a Class 2 Agent licence in Real Estate (with or without restrictions).
The CPD obligations as an assistant real estate agent (formerly called a Certificate of Registration holder) must complete at least 3 units from the CPP41419 Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice.
Industry Training Consultants will deliver and assess from the qualification between March 23 2021 and March 22 2022 the following units;
- CPPREP4123 Manage tenancy
- CPPREP4171 Represent buyer in sales process
- CPPREP4105 Sell property.
The above units of competency are also based on the nationally endorsed CPP Property Services Training Package for the real estate industry sector, and is for people/learners who want to acquire the skills needed to sell, market, lease and manage real estate/property within a property agency at level 4 – Certificate IV.
You will learn the fundamental concepts relating to property and business law, risk management, appraising property including marketing concepts and requirements. These skills will be applicable across a range of property sectors -residential, commercial and industrial.
Note: If an individual applies for a Class 2 Agent licence using the old superseded qualification CPP40307 - Certificate IV in Property Services (Real Estate).
- at least one unit of the qualification must have been completed prior to the commencement of the reforms, and
- they will receive a conditional licence that is subject to a restriction condition.
For example: Class 2 Real Estate Agent conditioned to undertake sales and leasing or on-site residential property management only.
9am – 5pm (Face to Face) and up to 4 months by correspondence.
Any agent who successfully completes these units will be issued with a statement of attainment and transcript, demonstrating the number of units completed.

Licence and certificate holders must retain their own records of any compulsory, elective or business skills topics completed.
Certificate of registration holders must retain the statement of attainment issued for each unit completed from the relevant Certificate IV for their area of practice.
Licence holders (class 1 and class 2) must retain all records for 3 years.
Certificate of registration holders must retain all records for 4 years.
Licence and certificate holders will also be required to provide evidence to Fair Trading that they have completed the required CPD topics. Fair Trading is developing an online recording system for training providers and licence holders. Before this is ready, licence and certificate holders should retain their own records and must provide these records as evidence, if requested.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO CONSIDER
Licence or certificate of registration holders who have:
- applied and received a licence or certificate of registration or,
- restored or reactivated a licence or certificate of registration that has been expired since the commencement of the allocated CPD period,
are not required to undertake CPD if that licence or certificate of registration commenced less than 90 days or within 3 months of the expiry of the allocated CPD period (ie 22 December to 22 March).
This exemption is applied automatically, holders are not required to apply for the exemption.
Note: This exemption does not apply to a licence or certificate of registration that is recommenced following a period of suspension or cancellation where a condition has been applied under the Act requiring the holder to complete specified CPD.
A certificate of registration commences within 9 months of the expiry of the CPD period;
are still required to complete a minimum of one unit of competency from that year, from a valid Certificate IV qualification that is required for the issue of a Class 2 Agent licence.
A licence commences within 9 months of the expiry of the CPD period;
are still required to complete both the compulsory topics and elective topics for the current CPD period.
